Lumbering and fur trading contributed to a strong economy in the city’s early days, while manufacturing and shipbuilding are the present-day staples. The city of Marinette, population 10,968 in the 2010 census, is the county seat and a thriving city located on the Bay of Green Bay. A sister city to Menominee, Michigan, Marinette welcomes visitors from across the border daily. The city prides itself in its small-town charm, yet maintains a modern, progressive attitude of a city-on-the-move. “Expanding horizons” is the city’s motto.
The School District of Marinette is home to the Marines. Students in the district study in six different schools in the city. The youngest attend Menekaunee Sunrise Early Learning Center, 115 Hancock St. The district’s three elementary schools are Merryman Elementary, 611 Elizabeth Ave., Park Elementary, 1225 Hockridge St., and Garfield Elementary, 1615 Carney Blvd. Students in grades 5 to 8 attend Marinette Middle School, 1011 Water St., and in grades 9-12, Marinette High School, 2135 Pierce Ave.
